AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES/PERSPECTIVAS AMERICANAS/PERSPECTIVE AMERICANE: DON RIGGS

 A DEBUT NOVEL:
FIGHT FOR YOUR LONG DAY BY ALEX KUDERA.
Kensington, MD: Atticus, 2010. 14.95, pbk.

Alex Kudera’s debut novel, Fight for Your Long Day, focuses on the experience of a large segment of the contemporary teaching population, the adjunct instructor, but the scope of the novel’s vision goes far beyond that one sociological type.  Through the protagonist, Cyrus Duffleman, we see a cross-section of contemporary American society in a self-consciously multicultural era, with the tensions among members of the interpenetrating layers of class and ethnicity always near the surface, and at times breaking through.
Duffleman is about 40 years old, and as such is sandwiched between the generation of the postwar Baby Boomers and their progeny, many of whom are of college age now.  The American university system burgeoned with the return of World War II veterans under the GI Bill, then rapidly expanded in the 1960s to accommodate their children.  Universities scrambled to employ professors and give them tenure to teach the sudden mass of students, with the result that the generation represented by Duffy are both highly educated, since institutions of higher education were running in full gear, and underemployed, since they were fully staffed with tenured professors.  This combination of factors has resulted in a generation of very perceptive observers of the human condition who cannot help but view the current societal stresses with ironic eloquence.
Such is one of the many strengths of this novel.  It is not comfortable, for the position in which Cyrus Duffleman finds himself is awkward, embarrassing, at times humiliating, and yet the clarity of his insight—with which the formerly idealistic rebels of the generation now in power in academe and elsewhere in the nation are skewered by his amusement—strikes the reader as, unfortunately, all too penetrating.  Students in his classes must be challenged, but university administrators, fearful of lawsuits and “helicopter parents,” equivocate when an instructor crosses an invisible line.  Meanwhile, the peccadilloes of tenured senior faculty go unchallenged.
The process of assimilation of successive waves of immigrants, long considered a major strength of the United States, nonetheless is still problematic when the jingoistic attitudes of descendents of earlier waves of immigration forget their great-grandparents’ origins and jeer at college students with accents and political attitudes counter to the mainstream. In particular, the aftereffects of the destruction of the World Trade Towers known as “9/11” have resulted in suspicion and defensiveness, resulting in the Department of Homeland Security, and the use of this generalized anxiety to fund new programs in the Military-Academic Complex appears in a blackly humorous episode of the novel.
In part, Cyrus Duffleman is an observer of the Human Comedy who, like Erasmus in his Praise of Folly, acknowledges that foolishness is everywhere, including in himself, but who, like Sisyphus, realizes that he has no other choice but to soldier on.  After a well-deserved sleep capping his Long Day of teaching in several institutions, Duffy knows that he has another day before him, and another day following that.
